Works fine, but 5V supply is not necessary (in my opinion).
I use this to switch my mouse, keyboard, webcam and headset between a work laptop and a home laptop. Works very well. I used to have an older cheaper one with disconnects. There are no disconnects, but without a 5V power supply I had problems with my wireless Logitech USB headset. Once I plugged it into a USB outlet/power bank, I had no more issues. I love that it automatically switches to any device that has power, so switching between my work laptop and desktop is super easy, and I don't even need a manual switch when it's off.
