Bought a few years ago, the mattress provided excellent stain protection, although there have been no major accidents during use. The problem is that I just took it off and the bottom cover where my head area was was completely flaky with the protective layer that the bottom of the protector uses. Sizes ranged from dust to half an inch. It seems like the material just breaks down over time, leaving an absolute mess that's probably not good for breathing. I've never tumble dried it and have only had to wash it on the gentle cycle a few times while I've had it.
