At least for the bass I didn't notice any difference in the sound with a good cable and there is no noticeable lag. For flexibility, order a second set at the same time - this means that the effect device can also be separated from the amplifier and/or have two basses on one receiver for easy switching. My main bass has an angled plug and it barely fits. For this bass I might start using it with an extension and just wish the extension had a straight plug instead of a square one. But good value for money and very easy to get started.
