A simple motor controller works as expected.

The controller worked right away, but there are three settings that can be adjusted to make it work better. The first two parameters are the upper and lower limits of the duty cycle. The controller uses pulse width modulation to change the speed of the motor. The controller does not change the voltage to the motor, only the length of time the motor is powered. The default lower duty cycle limit is 0, which means the motor is never powered. The default upper limit is 100, which means the motor is powered 100% of the time. The motor I tested does not run under 30 duty cycles. The speed controller on the controller does not have stops like normal potentiometers. It just keeps spinning in either direction, increasing or decreasing the duty cycle. This means that even though my motor stops at 30 duty cycle, the controller can still reduce the duty cycle down to 0. To start the engine again I have to turn the knob until it reaches 30. With the lower limit set to 30, the controller never goes below 30 no matter how far I turn the knob, and it jumps right in as I increase the duty cycle. The controller seems to be well made. The case is made of plastic, but is quite robust. The board looks clean and well finished and the solder joints are clean. There is a place on the board for soldering the stop switch. After adding the switch it works as expected. If the open motor allows operation, closing the switch will stop the motor. There is a short delay (<1s) before the motor restarts after opening the circuit breaker. There is a diode on the board to prevent damage if you connect the power supply the other way around. Tech support responded when I had questions. Emails were answered quickly, usually within a day.
