Since my milkweed plants attract butterflies to lay eggs, when the caterpillars are about half their adult size I move them into the cage and onto my shaded porch to continue feeding and form pupae to grow to their full size. I enjoy being a part of this beauty of nature, from birth to the release of beautiful butterflies. The cage is fine and I recommend buying one that has a clear plastic panel on one side (like this one) - it makes it a lot easier to see more detail inside the cage. And I made the "bottom" out of cardboard (from a large box) and covered it with polyethylene so it wouldn't dry out. I put some paper towels on the bottom to help clean up when the caterpillars defecate. Also, the bottom adds strength as I take the cage outside with two loop handles on top to give the milkweed plants more sunlight when the caterpillars gobble them up.
