Bought this on the random recommendation of the author Christopher Moore, and I can't be more happy with the choice. The main thing this does is amplify voices over background and normalize them to the volume level. Suuuper good for movies where you have loud explosions in one scene followed by quiet dialog the next - you can set the volume to the level you want and hear everything. For this reason I'd recommend this soundbar for any typical household. It's not going to have the big exciting booms and dynamic range you'll get from an audiophile setup but if you want to understand dialog more than you want the theater experience in your house you can't go wrong with this soundbar.There are various settings to change the level of voice enhancement - for me the higher levels sound a bit weird but my hearing isn't that bad yet. I could see it helping with people who are more hard of hearing than I am.
