So far so good - Dishwashing sponges

This works very well with my cast iron. It doesn't require soap, but it provides good exfoliation without the mess and awful feeling of steel wool on your hands (I don't know why, but I can't stand the feel of steel wool). It has metal rings on a silicone-like pad, and they're good at scraping things that stick right to my pan. No soap or soaking is required and the handle means I don't even have to get my hands dirty. After using and rinsing it, I set the pan on the stovetop for a few minutes to dry and brush with oil to preserve the seasoning (I used this oil on the stovetop a little beforehand. bake"). Switch off the burner and let it cool down). It removes some of the fat needed to clean anything stuck to the cast iron and leaves the seasoning intact. My only complaint about it is that it doesn't penetrate the area between the bottom of the pan and the sides very well. Right in the recess there is a small area where the floor goes to the side. This stuff stays in there because it's too big and can't be compressed to fit in there. Because of this, I had to bring another scrubber to the area. I don't often have leftover food, but my Dutch Oven had charred bits in that area from the browning of the stew and they didn't come off because I couldn't fit it in that area. It's a bit annoying, but for other things (like making hamburgers or steaks) it's great because I don't usually end up with junk in nooks and crannies. Overall I'm happy with it, but it would be great if they found a solution to get into those hard-to-reach places.

Pros
  • Dishwashing sponges
Cons
  • Doubtful purchase for older people
