Considering the price of this lens it goes without saying but the image quality and sharpness with this lens is much better than the 18-55mm kit lens . I use this lens with the NEX-5 and it has become my go-to lens that I use most of the time. Sometimes I use pancakes. You'll love the almost 4x zoom range compared to 18-55 and the shallow depth of field you can achieve with this lens. Very good for portraits. In video mode, however, I found it very difficult to zoom without a tripod. It is not possible to move the zoom ring manually while holding the lens with one hand and the camera with the other hand and NOT shaking the camera or zooming at an uneven/jerky speed. Even with a tripod, it's difficult to zoom in smoothly. Yes, this lens is heavy and looks ridiculous on the small body of the NEX5, but it still beats the chunky lens and chunky DSLR combo in terms of weight and portability in my eyes ;-) Pros: -Zoom range -Image quality Cons: -Zoom creeps with the lens down, which is a problem for tabletop photography (camera on tripod with the lens down) - when paired with the Nex5, the camera is no longer level on the table as the bottom of the lens extends over the bottom of the camera. If you need a flash, you'll need to buy the optional Sony HVLF20S (add an extra $150) as the standard NEX flash doesn't clear the lens and cast a shadow.
