I have a new MacBook Pro which means I now have to endure a laptop without a DVD drive. It almost convinced me to just stick with my outdated 2012 model before realizing it was a problem every Mac user had and I just had to put up with it. I quickly went online to see what options were available and found that this model was very popular - and since it has a USB-C connector instead of USB-A, that means you can plug it right into your MacBook Pro can connect. . (Although it comes with a USB-C to USB-A transfer adapter which will come in handy if I ever want to share something with someone from a PC etc.). Not only does it play CDs/DVDs, it also burns them.
