TWC just fried my modem last week, presumably during one of their updates. I owned it for a little over 3 years to avoid the rent. Tech came out today and replaced it with a TWC modem which I will quickly replace once my new purchase from Revain arrives. The TWC website no longer supports this RCA modem, so I cannot replace it with a similar one. Make sure your cable provider supports it before you buy! I ordered the exact same cable modem that Time Warner has provided me with for years and just started charging $3.95 a month for rent. Since I have to fight them every 2 years to lower my monthly bill to keep me as a customer, there is no way I would pay that rent. My purchase will pay for itself in a year. I didn't feel the need to buy the more expensive models that TWC listed as compatible on their website - they're $77 and up! I chatted online instead of sitting on hold on the phone waiting for a representative. In less than a minute someone was online with me. Although the whole conversion process took about 30 minutes since she verified my account, got the MAC number etc. the live chat worked great for me. I could run and do other things and just follow the chat summary. The new modem is installed and everything is fine.
