If you need to migrate an existing Win XP drive to a new Maxtor drive, forget it if you rely on the software that came with it. You need to buy a copy of Norton Ghost. It's a lot quieter than the WD Caviar I used. It is not yet clear whether this will happen so quickly. But the real cost to me was the disastrous MaxBlaster software which will NOT make a copy of your old hard drive if Win XP is installed on it. As another reviewer says, it hangs at 90% during the copying process (about 4 hours for an 80GB transfer!). After trying again and again, I called Maxtor tech support who admitted they can't make a copy of the XP disk. They told me to buy separate software to transfer my old drive to the new one. No apologies, nothing. Unlike the other reviewer, I spent most of the three days migrating the old drive (which worked fine - I just needed a bigger drive). I spent $70 for Norton Ghost which did the job flawlessly once I set it up properly. It appears to be a good drive, but it is misrepresented as an XP capable drive. If a program can't move a good XP disc to this disc, don't claim it can. I have no idea if WD's built-in software (or anyone else's) can do this, but I've invested a lot of time and extra money to get this drive working. Seems to be a good ride. But I will never believe Maxtor's claims again.
