Roof racks are not installed on my car so they are definitely a lifesaver. We recently started kayaking and with our newest SUV they scratched the roof of the car, even a bit underneath. With these pads, not only did they put quite a large buffer between the sides and my car, but even when I drove out of town, about 3-4 hours away, my sides never touched the roof of my car. The padding on them is thick enough that despite the weight of the boards, they didn't fall exactly where the boards got even close to my car. I was even able to strap on a kayak with a paddle next to it and again not have to worry about it scratching my car. Even the straps and pads themselves don't scratch my car. They're really easy to install and when they're on, they don't move a bit. Even with bumps in the road no movement.
