The best way I can describe this item is because the smaller lead is about the same size as the marker. Whereas the larger lead is slightly larger in diameter than the felt tip pen. Although there is a spring inside the device, it's not what I expected. I thought it was spring loaded with tension. Even though it was, it wasn't the way I wanted it to be. It works like this, you see a little grip around the larger bar separating both bars, then you might think you can pull out the smaller bar and pull it to the distance you want, but you can't. What. It's designed so that you hold the larger bar in one hand and unscrew the smaller bar to your desired size. Then you unscrew it and make it a little longer, and then you get the spring tension, then adjust it where you want it, and then with the extra 1/2" or 2 you lengthened, feel the tension when you slide one end of the rod with the rubber stopper to the side and then use the larger one with the other rubber stopper to push the smaller rod in slightly and push firmly in. In other words, unscrew it to the correct length to give you a starting edge and then continue unscrewing it, making it slightly longer so it has enough tension to snap it in. Although the rods were smaller than I would like, I still give the product 5 stars because it does its job Served it's purpose, it was just a little different than what I'm used to Thank you GK
