I bought a stick to try and noticed two things. At first I found it to have a pleasant clean soap smell, very similar to ivory soap with a hint of lemon. Very nice clean scent, not overpowering at all. No, this is not a trendy Truefitt and Hill or Taylor of Old Bond St. fragrance, but rather a Williams Mug soap. Second, when I used it I just rubbed it all over my face and then lathered it up with a shaving brush. Light foam! The lather is also very smooth for a great shave. The lather quality and smoothness is as good as many high quality creams and soaps I've tried. In fact, it outperforms some and matches most quality materials. Very amazing for the price! Some complain that it dries out the face. I found it didn't dry my face out as much as Williams did. Since I use an aftershave spray or balm, this isn't a problem, but I've found that it doesn't particularly dry my skin even when I don't. If you are looking for a very good everyday shaving soap, buy it and try it.
