April 7, 2009 - Magellan 1470 GPS ordered from Revain. My guess is that Magellan will be the best GPS I've ever had. I have an IWAY 250c and it works great. I wanted one that says the name of the street instead of just saying "Turn on CT168" or "Turn on the street". So I took the plunge with the next generation of GPS. April 8th 2009 - went to the website to see if it had shipped and he told me it hadn't but it was supposed to arrive on the 13th. April 9, 2009 - I received an email from Revain that it has been sent. Of course, being tracked by the USPS is lame. They just tell you it's on the way. Not as good as UPS where you can track it from the distribution center to your door. but the price was better with USPS. April 11, 2009 - What, to my surprise, but today the postman was driving a car with a GPS in hand. You could knock me down with a feather. I opened the box and found that all the parts were neatly packaged. I took the Magellan 1470 out of the box and charged it using my DC adapter (it's not included, I would suggest getting one to test and charge). After a while I started using it. The first time he caught the satellites in about 2 minutes, and the next day it took 5 minutes. I logged into my base station and then tried logging into a few places to test. I didn't find the touchscreen too difficult to use. It looks like most GPS I've used in this regard. Then when I entered all the data and told them to drive to their destination, it had no way of simulating the drive. I have this on my cheaper IWAY 250c and love the feature. Also, you can't scroll to a distant point of interest to select a restaurant or rest stop. This allows you to select only POIs in your current location. With IWAY 250c you can find a point on the road and select a POI at that location. Nice feature. I bought this to see if they improve at all. Not yet. I don't want to keep comparing this to the old GPS, but hey, it was good. why not keep using the old one? well, he's getting old and won't say the name of the street to turn into. The newer ones have it and the screen is smaller but my eyes need a bigger screen. The display is not bright enough for a sunny day. So it's time to step up. But I want to go up, not down. ----- Let's take a trip ----- I took a Magellan 1470 with me for the trip. Set my target with no problems. The keys are a little tight, but nothing to complain about. If I were using this as a word processor it would be a problem, but if you just type occasionally there's no problem. Typing an address on screen will give you a better guess as you type. After that, I select "Go” and a map with the estimated time of arrival appears on the bottom left. Clicking on this corner changes the estimated time of arrival to arrival time, direction or time remaining. Attaching to a window mount is very difficult and holds up very well. The mount is adjustable and the GPS can be moved for better viewing. When driving on the Autobahn, traffic signs are placed at the top and the correct lane is highlighted as you approach the exit or lane you should be on. Nice feature, I like it. The voice is clear and predicts the next move well in advance. The screen is clear and easily visible in daylight. 2D or 3D mode is switched simply by pressing the left corner. --- Challenges --- I would love to plan a route and then watch a test run or simulate it using GPS. I can do it on Iway 250c and it's a really nice feature. I would also like to scroll to a waypoint on the screen and select a waypoint to stop and see if there is a place to sleep. I noticed that on the Iway250c, when I scroll forward, the distance from my current location is highlighted. Hey! why can't they put it in the more expensive ones? I've noticed more times than I'd like that the GPS thinks my house and some other places are across the street. While that's a minor complaint, the old one did in a few places too, but not as often as the 1470. That the traffic adapter is a separate device is a little annoying. That means you have to use the adapter to get traffic updates. Speaking of which, I would also like to point out that when using a traffic adapter, ads appear at the top of the screen. There is no Bluetooth connection with your mobile phone. The phone number of the POI is displayed when you access it, but you cannot call it from the GPS. I drove on the Autobahn with the travel adapter and was stuck in traffic for 15 minutes and the travel adapter didn't say anything. Today I tried it again and it worked. So I got around the traffic jam and drove through the city and its surroundings. I still have these ads for Ramada Inn and then Walgreens I think that's what you get for free traffic. I think there will be something new for this GPS. Result? I think it's a tie. it works and for most it will be a great gps. I'm looking for something else. My sister uses this and thinks it's great. She quickly finds a place and what bothers me doesn't bother her. It was easy for her to use and she didn't even look at the instruction manual. So while it wasn't for me, it's great for her. Confusing? so true. As is the case with most subjects, you read and read, and the more you do, the more confused you become. Good luck in your search for the perfect GPS.
