The substrate arrived wet which is fine as it is not a living substrate but it specifically states that it must be dry. There was cat and dog food in the box it came in. I don't know if this applies to all bags of substrate but the one that was sent to me contained 1-2 pounds of crushed coral in the substrate suggesting uneven grain size as indicated in that substrate. However, after some effort and careful sieving of the substrate when cleaning, the substrate is now a uniformly sized oolitic granule, softer and less powdery than fine Caribbean sand.
