I mainly use the auto center punch to mark the wood ends when turning on a lathe. I used cheap aluminum that eventually broke. Reading the reviews it seems that all cheaper autocentrators have a tendency to fail. I didn't want to spend money on a Starrett which I know would be great so I ordered this Fowler which is priced between a Starrett and cheap. I was pleasantly surprised when it arrived as it's a lot heavier than I expected. It's a decent weight, and the hardened steel tip can be adjusted with little effort to drill much deeper holes than my old hammer drill if I wanted to. This one is a guard.
