Works as it should, you just have to know what you're doing.

Yes, it loses power if you turn it off for any reason, but just unscrew the inlet from the top and pour some water in to restart it. It's just hobby work, don't expect a $30 canister filter to perform like a $300 canister filter, that's why you bought it so cheap anyway. It has enough room for all different types of custom filter media and there are no real replacements so you have to buy a cutout to fit the filter media or use mesh bags. You'll save money by buying this, but it does require a bit of work to get it working properly and maintained like everything else in the hobby. Overall very happy with it, just bought another one for my buffer tank in figure 8.
