Like most devices that convert slides and negatives into digital photography, this one uses a camera inside the device that essentially takes a picture of what it sees. What they don't tell you is that the camera is locked onto the largest negative the device will take. In this case, the large format negatives are 2.5 x 3.5 inches. If you want to convert a smaller film, it just uses a cropped version of the camera's CCD image and therefore a lower resolution. It's a great tool for converting large format negatives, but it's not very impressive for 35mm slides, for example.
