This product should really be called a replacement brush as it has no extension and is virtually useless without it. My guess is that this way you keep shipping costs down (and you don't need a long pen box). But the marketing isn't very clear on this, and there's even a photo showing a pen. I think the larger text refers to the handle sold separately. Luckily I was able to use the handle of an old mop (the thread size was the same) and found the brush to work very well on outdoor hard surfaces such as driveways, patios and porches, but it is not suitable for indoor use as these types of bristles attract more dust generated inside. The brush is very durable and measures 12 inches. The plastic case makes it easy to clean and maintain, and the plastic bumper feels comfortable. Not sure if it's worth the extra price compared to something cheaper at the hardware store (pen included), but looks like a quality product that will last for years.
