My local Toyota dealer told me I need new tires. Coincidentally, they had a special tire the following month. Being a curmudgeon, I waited until my local Sam's club had a tire sale because our family buys their tires there. Well, when I handed the car over to Sam, the technicians told me that the tread depth on the tires was fine. What gives? Looking back on all past car service records, my tires seem to go from brand new (green on Toyota service chart) to yellow (needing service very soon) between 5 and 10,000 miles of wear. And tread depth varies from service to service. It was the same sensor that Sam's techs used, and it's so easy to read (there are green, yellow, and red colors). Before my last service, all my tires were green and I didn't worry about buying new tires unnecessarily. I wish I could trust my local dealer, but peace of mind has never been cheaper!
