I keep a trickle charger on my ranch equipment batteries year round. So they have to be waterproof. I find the cheapies only last just over a year. It's more cost effective to pay extra up front and get 5 years out of them. This one wasn't as expensive as some of the others I've bought, but its weight and build quality tells me it might last the full 5 years. We'll see.TIP (I've now owned this charger for 5 months): I leave the charger permanently mounted to the vehicle and connected to the battery. After using the vehicle I plug the charger back into the AC power, NOTHING HAPPENS. You can press the mode button all day and cycle through the options but it will not charge. Instead, you must unplug the AC and disconnect from the battery. Wait ten seconds. Then reconnect to the battery and plug it back into the AC. Now use the mode button and it'll start to charge. SHEESH! So, if the power blinks-out, it won't resume its trickle charge. If you use the vehicle you must first unplug it from the battery then reconnect it. What nonsense. For permanent mounting. buy a different charger.
