I have used several scanners over the years and in the early days they were built like tanks and generally worked very well. Then came the usual price cuts so they could all out-price each other. The market is dominated by these cheap scanners (usually around $100 or less) and for the most part they are junk. However, this scanner is a throwback to the days when everything was well built. It is robust and has a large scanning range. I was looking for a large scan area to be able to scan old piano music, this music has always been published on very large sheets not suitable for letter/legal scanners. Large bed scanners are rare and much more expensive than cheap ones. However, in this case it is also an improvement in the overall quality. You can tell it just by listening as it scans noises like a very smooth running machine running on quality support surfaces. I was very hesitant to buy this because of the price, but I bought it anyway and am very happy with the product itself. If you need a scanner with a large scanning area and like well-made tools, this is a good choice. Oh, by the way, it takes up a lot more desk space than the old letter/legal format, but hey hey, that's to be expected.
