I bought these in addition to buying a carpentry dowel jig separately. I use a dowel jig to center the hole on the board's end grain, then use spikes to transfer the centers to the opposite side. on the second part perpendicular to the tree and the right angle for the joint. They work very well. I determine the position with a point drill, then fasten these guides in place and then drill the hole to the correct depth. I bought a kit with the full range up to 1/2" as some of the dowels I use are small, up to 1/2". I'm sure they work well when drilling holes in round dowels, I just haven't used the functionality yet so can't comment on that. They're really well built, but some of them are a bit overpriced. However, there aren't really any alternatives that look good, so I was willing to shell out money for a good instrument. I assume they will last a long time.
