2012 Silent Max 1000 Dead

I bought my Silent Max 1000 from Home Depot in 2012, and expected to get more than 6 years of use for my $350 including installation. Our Craftsman opener has been running without issue now for 20 years, minus a gear replacement that we easily DIYed. Over the last year, the electric circuitry in the Silent Max has been working only intermittently. It stopped working one day, then started up again a few weeks later, only to stop working for months in the dead of winter, then start again for months, and now it's off again. It seems that this is a control board issue that is common among 1 star reviews. Genie blames a power surge, but again, my Craftsman is plugged into the same outlet and has been chugging along since 1999 without issue. I'm replacing it with a Craftsman/Chamberlain product and have no plans to buy Genie again. The main pro for this unit is that it is indeed quiet.

Pros
  • It was a 4 hour reinstall on my part and well worth it..nice and quiet also.
Cons
  • The product instructions for the Genie SilentMax 1000 opener are difficult to read and follow
