Review on πŸ’» Ableconn PU31-AC-2 USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10 Gbps) Type-C and Type-A PCIe x4 Host Adapter Card with ASMedia ASM3142 Chipset by Robert Carlson

Internal USB-C card actually works, one with external connectors doesn't work

I bought two models of this card, but Revain doesn't allow me to write two different reviews, so I average the reviews by 3, but please pay attention to the details. I was struggling to find a PCIe USB-C card that would work well with my Logitech StreamCam. I bought several cards and many of them didn't work properly. The StreamCam either showed up as a USB 2 device and couldn't run 60 fps, or encountered other strange issues that slowed the framerate down to 5 fps at 1080p, causing a lot of USB kernel, v42l and alsa messages in dmesg stayed behind. The camera works well with a laptop with built-in USB-C and also works well with a USB 3.0 port on my desktop with a USB-C male to USB-A male adapter, but I wanted to plug it in directly. Of the first three cards I tried, the internal USB-C version of this card actually worked! I'm using this with a specific R6 USB-C case and it gets the USB-C port on my case working. Not good for charging (Ampere on my Pixel 3 reports a charging speed of 700mA) but seems to work with a StreamCam running Arch Linux on an Asrock EPYCD8-2T motherboard. Perhaps my only complaint is that the connectors are left-facing, so you basically have to leave an empty PCIe slot to the left of this card. Encouraged by this success, I decided to buy a model of this card with two external USB-C ports. although it was more expensive than others I've tried. Unfortunately, the card with external USB-C ports turned out to be the worst. Not only does it not work with StreamCam, but it also destabilizes the entire USB subsystem. Even if I don't connect anything to the card, just using it on my computer will result in the camera not working well with my motherboard's onboard USB-A ports! So what's the bottom line? Maybe there is poor quality control, or maybe one model is better than another. However, I will return the card with external connections.

Pros
  • Stylish and modern design
Cons
  • Crumpled packaging
