I had some old, weathered, termite eaten fence boards and decided to make an antique sign for my guitar room. Very simple process: 1. Laser print (inkjet will not work with this method) your graphics on plain white paper in REVERSE; Staples, Kinkos, etc. can be laser printed if you don't have them. You want the paper to cover the entire piece of wood so there aren't any break lines or differences in texture when all of the paper is removed. You can use several blank sheets of paper to tape the non-image areas of the tree if the tree is larger than your print. Remember that printers do not print in white. You will use paper for that color so any white/light areas in your image will show the color of the wood after the paper is removed.2. On a flat surface, apply a small amount of Liquitex to the center of a large piece of aluminum foil and apply Liquitex evenly to a cheap paint roller (I used a 3 inch roller). Apply the product smoothly to the wood, covering the entire front. Probably 1/64" thick? It just needs to be an even layer and not too thick. 3. Place the print face down on the already gelled wood, working edge to edge, smoothing out any bubbles/wrinkles .Let dry for 5 hours .4 After drying, dampen the paper with water and wipe all the paper with your hands/fingers - you will see the print appear when you are done.Let dry in order to see where the paper hasn't been completely removed.Liquitex is clear when dry, it may appear milky when slightly damp (which might give the impression that you haven't removed all of the paper).Leave it on best to dry completely before doing a second pass and wiping any areas that appear white BEFORE CONTINUING.5 Depending on your artistic vision and how it turned out, you may or may not be done with this t. inhaling for 30 to 60 minutes), spraying Krylon Clear Sealer all over the image will most likely cause the milkiness to go away and the image to return to normal. Opacity. It also keeps it in place to protect it from light scuffs etc. I ended up waxing mine to give it that "handmade" matte shine that many vintage wood pieces have. This is just my own method, after 2 pieces. No doubt there are better ways to do this, but this worked for me.
