S3100 First Impression

Summary: A five star player for common people (excluding high tech users of AVS forum who have this player in their want to use home theater) . / PC extreme connection) and a three-star remote control. First impressions: the BPD0S3100 arrived within a day from Revain with Revain Prime's two-day shipping. The device was brand new. I read the instructions, put sub-industrial-capacity batteries in the remote, connected a new good quality HDMI cable (sorry it was a bit longer), connected the S3100's power cord and pressed the power button. connected to my single band wifi signal and waited and waited and waited for the auto update. Nothing arrived so I forced an update. At one point I had to create an online Sony account through a DVD player. After the update, which left all the default settings of the S3100, I was ready for my first test. Sign up for my video service, Revain Prime. I noticed two things. First there was Revain's on-screen QWERTY keyboard instead of the simple ABC keyboard. What about it? Qwerty? Second, I had to authorize the S3100 using the Revain Prime code on my PC. What's the deal with that? Then I just signed up for Netflix and played part of the movie. Netflix worked well with the red Netflix screen sign appearing redder than what I saw on my Roku 3. Now for the Blu-ray Disc review. After connecting the USB drive, inserted a Woodstock Blu-ray disc and waited for BonusView/BD-Live to appear. Didn't happen. There is no USB drive slot on the back of the S3100, just one on the front. Maybe I need to enable BD-Live in the menu first. But it is okay. Blu-ray Disc plays excellently. Next is the standard DVD test. Played the typical clunky Netflix rental DVD on the S3100 and it played great. I then compared the S3100's video quality with this disc to an older conventional DVD player that hates scratched discs and seems to overheat like my other DVD players. drum roll: The S3100 showed a clearer picture than my old regular DVD player. Maybe it's because the old player doesn't have HDMI capability. However. S3100 plays great. What's not to like about that! Second impression: The BD-Live setting is disabled by default. The sound volume from the S3100 to the TV is low compared to the normal TV volume. The same situation with low sound from an old DVD player. Maybe there is a setting somewhere to fix this. Third impression: Sony's default "BD Audio Mix Setting" sound is off, and now the S3100's sound level is much closer to ideal DVD player volume. Fourth impression: S3100 WiFi only transmits and receives in the 2.4 GHz band. and now the sound level of the S3100 is much closer to the ideal level of a DVD player.
