Great! I have used Japanese waterstones in my chisels and planes for many years. My kit ranges from 320 grit to 8000 grit and allows me to achieve a full mirror finish. So why am I considering diamond stones? Well, all plates (cups) with water stones are used and are soft enough to be easily hollowed out. They also cut grooves easily, meaning if you rechamfer the 1/4" drill and move on to the next wider one in the same area, you may notice a lack of cutting edge in the drill's bevel. Obviously there are workarounds - start with the widest one. , follow the same path). While this is especially true for smaller grits, even 8000, which is relatively hard, requires sanding, which can be time consuming. So I decided to try diamonds. I used small diamond cards to touch up the cutters but this was my first time using chisels and flat irons. I bought this set for a number of reasons: DMT's reputation for quality, a good range of 3 different grits and a great price for a 3 stone set. I was concerned about the 6" x 2" size as I always use a Veritas jig (never developed handholding skills) which results in a shorter shot and my irons are 2" wide (on a 2" stone the edge easily overlooked). Results:* You cut very quickly. I chose not to use the word "aggressive" as it could mean expecting a rougher cut. I compared the surface scratch pattern they left with that of comparable waterstones and they matched well. The difference was how fast I got to the point, it took about 1/3 the number of hits on the diamond stones to get the same result!* They come ready to use, you need to soak 30 minutes before using Japanese Water Stones. .* Virtually no clutter (comparatively). Water stones build up a lot of sludge quickly and need to be flushed out constantly. These diamond stones only require a light spray and the dotted design captures particles well making cleaning quick, easy and rare. All it takes is a wipe with a damp cloth. I think I'd prefer a continuous surface to a little less than ΒΌ inch (DMT has other products that offer this). * The finest grit in this set is only 1200 and the coarsest grit is 325. I can see and feel a difference in performance when I buff the final bevel with an 8000 waterstone, but a 1200 finish is in for most jobs and most users Ok Note that DMT makes 2200 and 8000 grit stones, but I haven't tried them (yet). B. repairing or changing the bevel angle, it takes a 325 stone. DMT should consider offering a 4 or 5 stone set, but these 3 grits are sufficient for a wide range of grinding jobs.* Very light weight The diamond The plate is laminated in a hollow thin plastic box. This is a bit disappointing as it feels cheap (maybe one of the reasons the set is so cheap). Heavy downward pressure can/will deform the flatness of the tread, but since they cut so well, you don't need much downforce. The thing is, you really can't use them out of a wooden box as they're easy to move around. The box keeps them in place well.* Box. It's a good mount and has rubber feet on the bottom. For many things (e.g. chisels) it's handy to keep all three stones next to each other so you can quickly switch from one to the other. However, this is a pain for things like long knives. The lid sort of sits there so it can easily fall off. It would be better to use some sort of latch or magnets to hold it in place.* DMT uses a color code to identify the grit. While that doesn't bother me, it would be nice if they printed the grit number on the stone or holder. Unknown: How long will they last? Japanese water stones can last several times, level and you get a new stone, I still use the ones I got 15 years ago and only the coarsest are showing their age (thinning from leveling). How long these DMTs will retain their cutting ability remains to be seen, but from what I've read they should last a very long time. However, the small (non-DMT X-quality) diamond blades I use for my milling cutters didn't last very long, so I remain skeptical. I will update this review in the future and let you know. I would recommend these as a starter kit to anyone wanting to try diamond whetstones and I will likely be purchasing more DMT products. I don't think you can find better value for money with this set.
