Base and stand/hinge are fine. The base has just enough weight to keep it on the dashboard and the vertical stand has more than enough resistance to allow for adjustments but keep the phone in place. Issue with phone holder and vertical stand interface. The phone holder is not well designed for this task and even with a small phone like the iPhone 4 S, the phone can rotate as there is not enough resistance between the holder and the stand to keep the phone stable. The situation is compounded when you need to touch the phone for navigation, etc. The loose hinge allows the phone to move with every touch.
