Review on πŸ’¨ Crucial P5 1TB NVMe Internal SSD – Boost Performance at up to 3400MB/s by Steve Washington

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Wrong description, terrible support

I bought an SSD because of the advertised specs and performance. After installing a new i5 desktop system, I ran several hard drive testing utilities and found that the claimed performance was grossly exaggerated. This is approximately 50-70% of the declared number. I'm not a gamer and don't need heavy I/O so I'll keep going. Next I need and I use encryption. The drive claims to have hardware encryption. I'm an IT professional using Managed FDE in the real world. This disk was for the home, but I still use encryption. I tried to encrypt with a clean install of Windows 10 Pro (latest version). It only encrypts with Bitlocker in "program mode". So without using the declared hardware encryption. It's theoretically slower. I researched, called and chatted with Crucial tech support for about 4 hours and found it to be useless. You referred to documents that I had already read and did not understand the question. I tried 3 different calls and 2 chat sessions, amazing experience. I know that Windows 10 disabled hardware encryption by default about a year ago, but I also know of workarounds using GPOs. Nothing helped, the bios was set to UEFI and many other tweaks and registry changes were made. Therefore, hardware-based encryption cannot be used on this device. Even if it works for me, I doubt its reliability and stability. I will keep the drive for now but will never buy another Crucial product again.
