Fluffy and dirty, excellent base but requires little effort. I used four bags to start a heavily planted 24 gallon cubic tank. I bought a 5 gallon ($2) plastic bucket and drilled many small holes in the bottom. Put two bags in a bucket and put a hose on top, shaking it regularly. After about 10 minutes of whipping and rinsing, everything became clear. Poured it over the plastic on the picnic table in the sun, raking it from time to time to expose the damp material, and bucket cleaned the other two bags like the first one. Fluorite is about 1-2mm in diameter, it's not sand but not what I would call gravel. After doing this and carefully filling a new tank, I had no problems with haze. Just an opinion, but if you plan on planting very small plants in the substrate, you should think about putting a layer of black sand on top. Fluorite particles are 1-2mm in diameter, so there may be slight problems with very small plants/roots. Good stuff, do it right and wash yourself and you will be very happy.
