I have worn them while hiking in the Scottish moors. This, of course, saved from the swamp. I'm a small person and even with thick muscular calves they only work over something thick (like pants). They didn't sleep all the time, but I don't think I could lend them to anyone with skinnier calves or legs than me. Not sure how they will hold up. The buckle on your boot stays in place all the time. One star deducted (wish it was half) for the 'easy' buckle at the top being quite difficult to fasten. I had to pull it all the way down, wish the strap was longer for an even snugger fit.
