This worked great for my 4.5 year old who takes classes at the YMCA for about a year off and on. They use a similar product but it's not adjustable (in terms of buoyancy) like this one, which is great. Given my son's ability (nearly good dog paddling with minimal back support), I immediately removed one of the pads and it kept him afloat - and facing ahead - as he swam in the pool on a recent vacation. (He weighs 40 pounds I think). I agree with others that I would not give this to a 2 or even 3 year old unless he is a very advanced swimmer. This is NOT a "floating" device like waterfoils. It's MUCH better than swimwear. It leaves children's hands free to swim as usual and allows them to move properly in the water to learn how to swim properly. And what a great price for what it offers!
