Review on Insignia NS-WBRDVD2 Blu Ray DVD Player with Wi-Fi: Enhance Your Home Entertainment Experience! by Steven Lane

Best Buy brand Blu-ray player with a nice hidden feature

I bought a $59.99 refurbished Insignia NS-WBRDVD2 player on sale. The player plays Blu-ray films and standard DVDs adequately. It also has WI-FI capability and can connect to Netflix, Pandora and CinemaNow websites to download content over the Internet. The front display provides a convenient display of disc playback information (playing time, chapter number, etc.). Some reviewers criticized the player's remote control as some of the buttons were quite weak. My main reason for buying this player was its ability to toggle the default DVD region and Blu-ray player zone settings. Entering a numeric value (9113) after the "Setup" button on the remote brings up the change region menu on the home screen. You can change the default DVD region setting from 0 to 6 and Blu-ray region setting from A to C. This allows you to play any DVD or Blu-ray disc from around the world (especially the "locked" type). It was also reported that the player can play NTSC and PAL discs and convert 50 to 60 Hz for US TVs. It can play 1080i/50 Blu-ray discs used by some European studios. The special hidden region change feature was removed with the February 2011 Insignia firmware update (after the feature was reported by the owner to tech support). I don't have any other Blu-ray player to compare the picture/sound quality with this player. However, given the low price and handy region-switching feature, it more than makes up for the poor AV quality compared to more expensive and fancy Blu-ray players that can't be made region-free without hardware modification. You need the August 2010 firmware release to continue having the ability to change regions.
