I bought this lens as an upgrade to the Sony Kit 18-55mm lens. I use this lens with my Sony A33 and A57 cameras. This is Sony's new design with fast and quiet autofocus. It's not as sharp as my prime lenses, but could be sharper if I didn't insist on shooting wide open. I haven't had a chance to use the ssm lens but the focus on this lens is eerily quiet and doesn't work. Don't make me ask for something quieter, even when shooting videos. The only problem is that now that I have this zoom range I want more. I also shoot with megazooms and love their lens selection so I'm also looking at the Tamron 18-270mm.
