After several weeks of research I switched from a Klipsch system to 9040 series Definitive Technology (DT) towers and a center channel speaker. I also use the Promonitor 800 series speakers for surround back. Klipsch is good, very good, but DT takes the movie experience to a whole other level when it comes to audio. It wasn't until I saw the speaker packaging that I realized that this was a high-quality product. The speakers are beautifully designed. The 9000 series is a passive speaker system. For sound reproduction you need an amplifier or receiver. The center speaker is large. The size of a fat briefcase. I posted a photo of it next to my Promonitor 800s so you can see how much space it takes up. As big as the center channel speaker is, the sound it produces is much more powerful. Clear and pure footsteps and the whisper of broken glass hitting the floor, the 9040's center channel never misses a beat. The 9040 towers are amazing. They have built in active 8 inch subwoofers and require an outlet to power them. There's a volume control for the subwoofers on the back and they do a very good job on their own. You can also hook up subwoofers via your receiver's subwoofer output to the receiver's LFE input in the 9040 tower to fine-tune the bass to your liking, but on their own they're really really good. There are two sets of speaker terminal blocks. The top set is for the A90 Atmos speakers which attach to the top of the towers by simply removing the brushed aluminum top plate. The bottom speaker connector is for non-Atmos connections. The towers sound absolutely amazing. I have a subwoofer on both just under half and there is such a rumble. This is mature bass, not muddy. The tower tops produce such a pure and clear sound that together with the center channel speaker they easily fill my 14 x 26 living room. Since each tower has its own subwoofer, the sound is now distributed evenly throughout the room. From whispers and action scenes to thunderous explosions and bullet casings falling to the ground, the DT 9040 Series reproduces every sound the way it was meant to be heard. I've been told they'll sound even better when they're played in. Can't imagine how much better as it sounds like a movie theater in my house. I use 9040s on my Sony DH 790 receiver. Was it expensive? YES, of course it was. Was it worth it? YES, of course it was. If you're looking for a quality sound system that gives you the cinematic feel of your own home, the Definitive Technology 9000 Series is for you.
