Inexpensive long square shank bits

L. Robertson, who invented and patented the square shank screw, got Ford to use Phillips head screws in their first manufacturing operations . This in turn led to the widespread use of Phillips screws in the United States. For those of us who accidentally created a lot of "guard” bolts—bolts that can't be removed without a puller and drill—wish Ford and Robertson didn't get along better. Robertson's patent expired in 1964 and square drive screws are becoming increasingly available here. They are common for pocket hole joiners and every time I need to buy a screw I struggle to find square head or torx screws instead of Phillips screws. These bits are the right size for pocket hole screws and some deck screws. I use. These bits are longer than typical impact driver bits. The extra length is almost necessary to turn pocket-hole screws. Square shank bits don't wear out or get damaged as easily as Phillips bits, so they should be durable. The price is reasonable so you can afford to have extra tools in your toolbox.
