Yes, it seems to be the only game in town. I have seen locks of hair (on newborns) that are thicker and have more tension than the spring that comes with this product. Apparently the "spring" (included) is supposed to help the interlock switch open after passing the step. A spring (sufficient force) will help you lock the stage you choose.
