Perfect goals! I have a 4 foot opening between my living room and dining room and was looking for something to hold the dog to one side or the other (he is an active 7 year old husky weighing 75 pounds). These gates were easy to install, simple, traditional and somewhat brilliant in design. There was no piece that went into the ground - there is a piece that attaches to the bottom center of the gate - this piece rests on the ground and gives support to the wide center gate when extended. It's been like this for 6 months and I've never pinched my finger or anything. I manage to step over it, but it's so easy to open and close that I don't usually even try to step over it. My dog is big - she pushed the gate but did him no harm and the gate was strong enough that he stopped trying. The first day he tried to walk on it. Luckily he didn't hurt himself or the gate even though he landed on it. It must have hurt a little - he just didn't fully recover and had to help him get his back legs on the ground. The gate wasn't blocked by his 75-pound self hanging from it. I'm glad I was there when it happened and I'm glad things weren't worse than they turned out to be. He was experienced enough never to try to get through the gate again. He jumped up to put his paws up like he does outside by the fence - the gate gives a little but can take them without harm. And thankfully, he doesn't do that often. Initially the gate was very important as I was able to separate the cats that had lived here for 10 years from the newly adopted 7 year old large dog who wanted to hunt them. Over time the gate was perfect for the job - the cats could be seen but they were protected from him and gradually he got used to their existence. We were able to control his access to them and eventually teach him to be comfortable and not chase them at all. I had expected to remove the gate once we had achieved peaceful coexistence. but it reclines so easily and has come in handy on other occasions where I want to keep the dog lined up when the door is open or so for it to fit and remain useful.
