I'm willing to give it two stars because this product has REALLY worked very well for the first few months of its life. I probably copied 10-15 films that I later converted to digital copies. (It's a combination of programs that lets you do this, namely MakeMKV and HandBrake, and there are plenty of guides if you want guidance on what all the controls and specs mean.) However. In the last few weeks the drive stopped working. It is clearly bus powered and I can hear the hard drive spinning in the assembly. However, the disk is not mounted. (I have a Mac mini with Mojave if you're interested.) The seller has an email address you can contact for help. You can probably see it in the reviews section. He/she offered to buy a specific Blu-ray player application. While this is good advice, it certainly puts the cart before the horse: this player no longer accepts discs. So if there is no hard drive, the player has nothing to read. And for that matter, HandBrake and MakeMKV don't have the source code for data extraction. For what it's worth, I've tried loading different types of discs: CDs, DVDs, and BDs, as well as data discs (i.e. DVDs that contain files but aren't meant to be played). Nothing is installed again. I've also tried connecting in a variety of ways - via a Thunderbolt port, a USB 3.0 port, two different docking stations for each port type. To be fair, Cloud Tale offers a refund if I return the product, but I'm well past the return date. But it misses the main point: the bottom line is that you shouldn't be selling defective products. Yes, I commend the seller for trying to make a bad situation bearable, so I'm willing to return one star in the reviews. So. is it worth buying? It depends on you. Imagine a car that runs great, but only for a limited time. You don't know when or where, but this car will decide to stop. would you buy this Well, for a low enough price, you could. In the short term it drives well, the seats are comfortable and it has proven extremely safe in all crash tests. And maybe this is the car you need for a certain trip - a family trip to Wally World. You go, everyone is happy. And then one day your car crashes into bricks on the side of the freeway next to a gang of coyotes. Of course you knew this could happen, you took the risk and found that the manufacturer is even kind enough to drive 200 miles out of the way to pick you up, and even treat you to food along the way. For the right price, yes. that would be a very good offer. [By the way, as crazy as my hypothetical situation may seem, the manufacturer of this drive is just as interested in making things right with the customer as the chauffeur above. You can see this in their response to each one star review here. It seems like they should take the energy they devote to customer service and put it into quality control. Maybe it's a cultural thing.] Anyway, same basic idea here: maybe you need an external hard drive because DVD and Blu-ray are going the 8-track route and you want to use your quarantine to convert your entire video collection to digital to copy files. After that, you'll never buy physical media again, so you'll never need an optical drive again after completing this project. In this case, a worthwhile purchase. TL version; DR: Credit for making a product that works, not credit for making a product that lasts.
