The Blu-ray player has the limitation

Blu-ray player software is not included with this device. And it's not built into Windows 10 (I'm not sure about Windows 7). Verbatim support is offered by VLC Media Player but requires the AACS decoding library. I'm still working on it, but there were at least two different methods of installing the library, neither of which worked. I called Verbatim Support. Their tech support, which was very difficult to understand, claimed the product was plug and play. Of course, if you want to use it as a

Burns Blu-ray as expected, slow copying MakeMKV

I bought it to burn videos to Blu-ray and it works as expected. I use it with macOS and Final Cut Pro X; no additional software required. It does exactly what I need. I also used it to rip Blu-ray disc with MakeMKV and for some strange reason it never rips at more than 1.9x. For comparison, my seven-year-old Asus Blu-ray reader copies at 5.9x. Why would a newer device be so much slower? No idea, but that's the way it is. So if you plan to use this as a copy machine I would skip it. But for…

The best BluRay burner on the market!

I know optical media will be gone soon, but it's more convenient to use BluRay discs for archiving large video projects that won't clutter up your hard drives/SSDs. I do TONS of video editing, but most uncompressed projects can be around 50GB and I want to be able to back up those projects in case I need them again. I had a Samsung BluRay Writer and it lasted two years before it gave up the ghost. I trust Verbatim with my BluRay discs, so I trust them and their drive. In terms of the drive…

    not for Blu-ray playback

so I bought it thinking I could use it to play Blu-ray movies on my laptop. I figured you'd need additional software for this (I recommend VLC if you're a bit tech-savvy - it's free), but I was hoping to get a compact reader that would easily fit in my laptop bag. To be fair, he plays them, but only if they're in perfect shape. Any defects will cause it to freeze for a long time, and the disc will become unusable for viewing. Using the same drive in my Xbox caused no problems. I can't comment…

Very portable with slow read speed

This Verbatim drive is actually a Pioneer BD-RWBDR-UD03 v1.10. It comes with a regular USB 3 "A" to USB 3 "B" cable with an additional USB power dongle, which is common with external recording devices that require more USB power than the default . This drive comes with an optional optional power supply if your USB3 port does not support enough power to run the drive, which is very convenient and very thoughtful. Works well in terms of compatibility with DVD and Blu-ray media, I haven't made a…

Older 2010 device for 32-bit computers - AVOID - VERY DISAPPOINTING

Every time I tried to install the user manual, the table of contents page came up and then my froze system on. I'm running a Win10 system with an Intel Core i7-10870H processor, 32GB DDR-4 RAM and an Nvidia RTX 3060 GPU. Thinking it might be outdated files on the installation CD, I bought WinX DVD Ripper Platinum. EVERY TIME I tried to play a CD, DVD or BluRay disc I got the message "The disc is damaged. Please click cancel." I've also tried VLC media player. There are no dice. Since all DVDs…

Verbatim External Slimline Blu-ray Writer (70102)

previously labeled and sold as a Verbatum product. It appears in Device Mgr as a Pioneer product. The drive looks good and does a lot of things. It may come with Nero software, but it's an old version from 2015, a simplified and unconvincing OEM version, it's not a full retail software. If you want to watch Blu-ray movies on your PC with this drive and the software that comes with it. Forget it! This requires a $$ update/change of software and codecs.

    Terrible read speed

The build quality looks good but the read speed is terrible - some other reviewers have mentioned that the Bluray disc ripping speed is terrible, I can confirm that. Same machine, same software, this drive delivers 14 frames per second; while other internal BD drive + USB 3.0 enclosure configurations can run at 70 fps. Some might say that the firmware might be designed to prevent Blu-ray ripping by slowing it down, but the normal data disc reading speed isn't that good either. The device will…

    Works great on Linux

This recording medium is manufactured by Pioneer. It fits me. All burners are made in China. If they carry an established brand, they tend to have better quality control. As for Linux, I made some bases to try and burn the mkisofs UDF image. I tried K3V. It doesn't recognize the media (50GB) as dual-tiered and bombards it. Using growisofs from the command line resulted in a coaster. I got the right result with xfburn. If you're using Fedora, you need to compile the program from source, which…
