I am an experienced amateur furniture maker, and am refinishing an old bungalow in Arts and Crafts style furniture. I needed some door handles for a set of interior French doors, and after going online to look for the type of hardware I wanted was dumbfounded by the prices I found. So, I decided to build the hardware myself. The look I wanted for the back plates was to incorporate square, pyramid-headed nails on the four corners which is a common detail in furniture and hardware of the style. After digging around, I finally discovered these upholstery tacks. While larger than the 1/4" square size I was looking for, I decided to give them a try, and they worked out wonderfully. The nail shafts are securely attached to the heads and there should be no problem in driving them into soft woods such as pine of poplar. However, if you are considering driving them into a harder wood like oak or walnut, I would suggest pre-drilling a pilot hole so that the tacks drive straight and the heads do not bend on top of the shafts. Also, I would suggest using a plastic headed mallet for driving them so as not to damage the heads themselves. I will eventually be building some Stickley style chairs with leather seating surfaces, and plan on using these unique tacks to secure the leather.
