Is This Glue Right For You?

You may not understand, but anaerobic adhesives (adhesive that hardens in the absence of air) can be adapted to a wide variety of situations. This Loctite product is designed to penetrate already tightened fastener threads. It penetrates very well into the closed surface of the thread and then hardens. Another feature of these adhesives is that they exhibit both tearing and dominating moments. That is, it takes one level of force to loosen the connection and another level of force to further tighten the fastener. You want the breakaway torque to be almost as strong as the fastener so the fastener holds the assembly against cycling, wear and vibration. If it's too high, you'll have to break the clasp to take it off. The prevailing torque determines how difficult the removal will be, but also allows the connection to remain intact during a slower total loss. This adhesive is only suitable for medium to large fasteners. The small fasteners are too weak to absorb the breakaway torque. FYI, I thought they were too strong, but I still tested them on the pen loop on the back of the awl. These pesky clasps tend to open when not desired, resulting in jewelry being lost. I was hoping I could break the joint after it cured and leave the prevailing torque to offer some resistance to rotation. As expected, it was too strong for those tiny hinges found in jewelry pins. No I didn't damage the brooch, I bought a box of pins from an art supply store to experiment with. For now, the best solution is to squeeze the hinge with pliers to physically reduce the gap between the hinge pieces.
