Review on 🧤 Calico Joe Baseball Glove by Susan King

Two of my favorite subjects are covered in this book: baseball and redemption. Here are two definitions of atonement: (1) an act of salvation from sin, error, or evil; and (2) action to regain possession of something in exchange for payment or repayment of a debt. This well-written short story by Grisham (I read it cover to cover) tells the heartbreaking story of an abusive alcoholic father (who happens to be a professional pitcher for the New York Mets); the story of his eleven-year-old son; and a rookie phenom nicknamed Calico Joe, who is breaking records left and right as he approaches the majors with the Chicago Cubs. From three perspectives: an abusive alcoholic father; young impressionable son; and the talented young phenom Graham develops the story of what happens to each of these key players over the next thirty years. Without giving away the plot - the story keeps you on your toes while you hope for a great ending. Grisham develops (as usual) a great story that doesn't disappoint. The reader is drawn into the story from the start, and Grisham continues to draw the reader into the story. It's as if you are emotionally, spiritually, and sometimes even physically connected to the characters in the story. History is one of the great lessons: a life wasted or unexamined is not worth living; death is fast approaching – so make your life and relationships matter; there is a second chance; Salvation and forgiveness are possible for everyone. I recommend this book as an amazing read with an insightful, wise and hopeful ending.
