A touching story of forgiveness and redemption

Two of my favorite subjects are covered in this book: baseball and redemption. Here are two definitions of atonement: (1) an act of salvation from sin, error, or evil; and (2) action to regain possession of something in exchange for payment or repayment of a debt. This well-written short story by Grisham (I read it cover to cover) tells the heartbreaking story of an abusive alcoholic father (who happens to be a professional pitcher for the New York Mets); the story of his eleven-year-old sonโ€ฆ

Pros
  • A family saga
Cons
  • Crumpled packaging

unforgettable on the Family Saga

I liked this novel, like all John Grisham stories, because his characters have such a heart. I feel like now that I know Paul Tracy, I know what it's like to love baseball and want your parents to be your hero and your admiration to be always turned off. Thanks to Grisham's story, I feel like I can now watch baseball and know enough to enjoy it, so I read. Plunge so deeply into another world that it seems to me that I have actually visited this world. Calico Joe is the story of little boy Paulโ€ฆ

If you like baseball, read this book!

Calico Joe, written by John Grisham, is a novel about two major league baseball players, their families and fans. Much of this is told by Paul Tracy, the son of Warren Tracy, a journeyman pitcher who retired from the New York Mets in 1973 when Paul was eleven. The book jumps back and forth between 1973 and thirty years in the future. This is a wonderful story that immerses the reader in a professional baseball environment. Paul, like many boys, loved baseball and played in the minor leaguesโ€ฆ
