This is not a toy! for walkie-talkies

Don't let the 'Kids' name fool you. They are just as good as the Cobra models you find in B&M stores. Their rechargeable nature means a slimmer profile that's great for carrying in your purse and pocket. I accidentally left it on for 3 days and on the 3rd day I got a verbal warning "charge the battery". I thought I'd regret not buying an AA or AAA battery system, but found out you can use it while charging from the USB port. Just carry your USB power adapter with you and you're ready to go with an easily rechargeable system. At the peak of the charge it drew 5.1V at 0.84A and then 0.3A towards the end. Speaker volume is decent on the top end and can still be heard in a noisy mall/store. The sound prompts are a bit loud, but you can start the device at a low volume, adjust the settings, and then turn it on. Luckily, there's a lock feature so you don't accidentally switch channels. The only crappy part of this kit is the VOX headset. It's garbage and I threw it away. $25 for 2 solid radios, although it doesn't really matter. The range is surprisingly good. My partner went into a Walmart and I parked about 300 yards from the store and I was still getting noise free communication from the car. Given that even $100 radios in the suburbs average a similar 1 mile range, I'd be happy if this $25 set could match that range or even reach half. Did I mention this set is only $25?

Pros
  • Great for a small home
Cons
  • Questionable purchase for the elderly
