Review on Rokinon Xeen XN24 C Professional Canon by Mark Loredo

Revainrating 5 out of 5

A phenomenal lens at an incredible price

I've been a cinematographer for over a decade. I've used everything from the cheapest plastic lenses to $60,000+ cinema zooms. When Rokinon came out with their original line of "cinema lenses" I took a few and used them on some shots. Its image quality was decent for a lower-budget shoot, but its build quality was a joke. The suitcases were plastic and my colleague accidentally dropped one of them about 3ft off the floor and it just shattered into pieces. So when Xeen was announced, I was skeptical. The price was a lot lower than Zeiss or Canon for similar lenses, so the quality couldn't be up there, right? The answer is a resounding YES! The build quality is very, very similar to the Zeiss CP or Canon CN-E and the image quality is phenomenal. Shane Hurlbut runs a fantastic series of Xeen tests/comparisons/reviews which I highly recommend you review before you buy. The lenses have a *slight* green tint, but it's easy to deal with in post-processing and is comparable to how CP cools an image and CN-E warms it up. The lenses are very sharp, even wide open, which is crazy. The focus is buttery smooth and even at 24 you get a good depth of field. Highly recommended!

Pros
  • Features an aluminum body for increased durability, a tripod mount, large and easy to read markings and a long focal length (200 degrees)
