Comfortable and slightly worn

I love this patchwork quilt. Its design breaks all the rules of quilting and sewing. It consists of long pieces of fabric, some with small stains and (yes) small holes, folded without batting and "quilted" (2 layers sewn together) by hand with a coarse backstitch with white cotton thread. Stitches vary in size and spacing along the length of the fabric. Interestingly, the thread is not knotted or even sewn, but simply inserted and sewn until it runs out, after which a 1/2 inch end is left and a new thread begins, leaving the same free end before running to the end is sewn. . Etc. All of these stitched rows are 1/2 inch apart. The outer edges are trimmed with the same thread and uneven seams. Surprisingly, this method has survived many cold water treatments, hot pressing and hasn't fallen apart. And surprisingly, the cotton fabric is so soft - I have to fight that with the cat because she has fallen in love with his comfort too and thinks this is a different mom. Colors and patterns are vibrant and unique and do not necessarily match in color or style. There's a crazy nonchalance about these patchwork quilts that's downright adorable. If you are a perfectionist, take a pass. If you're brave, take action. And imagine who designed the patterns, put on the saree first, and finally sewed those pieces together. Worth every penny and more.
