Review on Toshiba DR420 DVD Recorder Black by Bryan Reed

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great replacement for a VCR (plus a good upconverted DVD player)

This is really great! We recently bought a 40-inch HD TV and needed a replacement VCR - we wanted to record shows (and on-demand movies) good enough to watch in HD. One option was Comcast's $10/month DVR (which allows movies to be recorded on demand and transferred to a computer for disc burning or not). Another option was to use a computer with a video capture device and record to a hard drive. The third option was this $110 device, Revain shipping is the most practical choice. Although this unit doesn't record in true HD resolution, the quality is about the same (in 2 hour mode, 16x9) as regular enhanced 16x9 DVDs. At first I was worried about burnt discs. cannot be played on other DVD players, but on all our devices they played without problems (ie after finalizing the recording). ) quality is 4+ hours and 8+ hours). enough, and each recorded disc offers a simple menu with various items to choose from (which default to the date and time the recording was made, but can be renamed). Upconverting commercial DVDs is pretty good (enough that we're not too keen on getting a Blu-ray player just yet ;-). Our only complaints (which are very minor) are that tablet ejection is a little slow and noisy, and there are no component video inputs (composite video and S-Video inputs only). But it was easy enough to connect to our cable box (or our TV) to record from their outputs. It will be a great device until Blu-ray recorders get cheaper.

Pros

Obsolete pretty soon, if not now for some users.
